Maharashtra Unveils Online Portal for Tree Census and Citizen Forest Monitoring

To promote urban forest health, Maharashtra’s Environment Ministry has launched a public platform where residents can access and update tree census data in cities like Pune and Nashik. Using GPS-based tagging and a mobile app, citizens record tree species, age, health, and location. The portal allows residents to “adopt” trees and get reminders for watering and pruning. Over 2.5 lakh trees have been mapped so far. Officials say the system has helped detect illegal tree felling and identify declining green zones. Environmental groups have praised the move for democratizing urban ecology management. The project could be replicated in other metro areas for climate-resilient urban planning.
